Turning tradition into an instrument of research: The editorship of William Nicholson (1753–1815)

Mainly known for its links to the periodical market and radical politics, this article recontextualizes the editorship of William Nicholson (1753–1815) in terms of its roots in the metropolitan natural philosophical circles of the second half of the 18th century as well as its impact on experimenters and men of science after 1797. The article argues that Nicholson's editorship of the Journal of Natural Philosophy, Chemistry, and the Arts was a means to expand his philosophical significance among natural philosophers at home and abroad—and was, in fact, a form of epistemological subversion that challenged the “Banksian Learned Empire.”

Omissions and errors in "Media violence and the American public."

Comments on an article by Bushman and Anderson (see record 2001-17729-001). We are concerned that Bushman and Anderson's article on media violence contains data that are incorrect or irreproducible. This is a serious issue; the article has already been referenced by numerous other formal papers according to a Google scholarly article search as well as in a statement to the U.S. Senate, in legal proceedings, and in California State law (Assembly Bill 1179 in 2005). The Design of Discrimination Experiments

Experimentation plays a fundamental role in scientific discovery. Scientists experiment to gather data, investigate phenomena, measure quantities, and test theories. In this article, we address the problem of designing experiments to discriminate between two completing theories. Given an initial situation for which the two theories make the same prediction, the experiment design problem is to determine how to modify the situation such that the two theories make different predictions for the modified situation. The modified situation is called a discrimination experiment. We present a knowledge-intensive method called DEED for designing discrimination experiments. The method analyzes the differences in the two theories' explanations of the prediction for the initial situation. Based on this analysis, it determines modifications to the initial situation that will result in a discrimination experiment. We illustrate the method with the design of experiments to discriminate between several pairs of qualitative theories in the fluids domain.

一种协调的科技文献分类方法

科技文献之间的相互引证关系反映了一种科学交流活动,显示了科学文献之间(甚至是学科之间)的内在联系,而通过追溯文献之间的这种关系,可以改善和提高传统的基于内容的科技文献的分类的方法。论文利用有相互引证关系,有同引关系,以及有耦合关系的两篇文献一般是属于同一类的这一特点,提出了文献之间的引用相似度,同引相似度,耦合相似度这三个概念,再利用这三个概念生成了文献之间的“结构相似度”,并将它用于K-NN分类法中得出一种基于结构的分类法。最后,论文将这种基于结构的分类法和基于内容的NaveBayes分类法结合起来提出了一种新的协调分类法。     

Ernest Hemingway As a Pre- existentialist——An Analytical Study of the Existentialist Ideas in His Work

Ernest Hemingway is hailed by many critics as a great craftsman, and“the most important, outstanding author since the death of Shakespeare”. On the other hand, he is severely criticized by critics who doggedly insist that Hemingway is too limited, his theme is too narrow, and, his characters are mute, insensitive and uncomplicated man. However, a very important aspect in the evaluation of Hemingway seems to have been overlooked both by those who devoutly adore him and those who strongly disparage him. This thesis therefore proposes to take a new perspective in exploring Hemingway‘s writing in the hope of exposing his existentialist ideas - consisting of “the absurd world” , “nada of life”, and “choice and code.” -as expressed in both his maior and his minor work.
